Chapter Eleven

Silver Demon

“Silver Chief. That’s your name.” More like Demon Chief. Dan faced the rearing stallion, admiring the strength in his hind quarters and beauty of the strong forelegs, even as he dodged the deadly hooves.

He’d arrived during rainstorm in the middle of the night and managed to get the stallion inside the fenced area behind the barn.

“Easy, easy,” he backed toward the small barn door, opened it and scrambled inside. “New horse in town, ladies,” Dan promised the mares as he checked on them.

“Doc knows what she’s doing,” he murmured in appreciation. He wasn’t surprised to find them in excellent shape. He climbed the ladder to the loft, and lit the stove in the tack room to warm it for later. Then he’d returned to the task of luring the stallion into the barn.

He’d expected to feel more satisfaction at bringing home the stud for his Palouse herd. Instead, he’d felt almost guilty as he’d faced the stallion trying to convince the animal he’d not miss his freedom.

“What can I do to help?”

He almost fell on his ass when he heard her call. Grace’s sudden appearance seemed like something out of a shaman’s story. He’d been alone and then there she was, offering him aid from the barn loft. Her voice spread a strange warmth through him, and he recognized what he’d been missing. Grace.

And he couldn’t have dreamed a sweeter homecoming. When he’d finished up below and stood in the loft with his arm around her shoulders, she’d gone rigid in his embrace. But, she was trembling from cold, and she did need his warmth. His reward had come when she’d relaxed as they watched the stallion together.

Something he’d said had sent her scurrying away but after she discovered the heated tack room, Dan’s only concern was her letting him stay. He threw her a towel from the stack of linens in the steel lined steamer trunk, and grabbed one for himself.

As he toweled his hair dry, he listened to Grace‘s report on the mares, and the list of events that had transpired while he was gone.

“There’s a new sheriff in Eclipse. The last one got shot by an outlaw. Charlie Wolf McCallister and a school teacher rescued eight students from The Sparrow Creek Young Ladies Academy and then Naomi Parker, the students’ teacher, married Charlie Wolf. Oh, and she turned out to be Comfort Quince’s long lost sister.”

“I take it Henry has kept you abreast of the local gossip,” Dan said wryly. “I have serious doubts about the part that has Charlie Wolf marrying the teacher.”

“Henry guarantees all his news is the latest and most true.” Her expression remained solemn, but her eyes lost their pensive sadness.

Yes, she’s better. He studied her.

She was still too thin, but the weight she’d gained had filled the hollows in her cheeks and given her a healthy glow. As she told him about what he’d missed while he was gone, her lips curved into more than one smile, and her translucent skin flushed with pleasure.
